Only the elf wasn’t a real elf, because elves don’t actually exist – not even at Christmas time. A college student dressed like an elf decided taking a nap in sub-zero winter temps was a good idea. It wasn’t. Anna, the pink-haired baker extraordinaire of Callie’s Cakes, is convinced the student’s death was not an accident. She drags Callie and Kristie along with her as she attempts to discover who killed the elf … um… student.

Interview with the Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

I can’t remember a time I wasn’t interested in writing. All children like to tell stories. At some point, I decided to write mine down and I never stopped.

What genres do you write in?

I write cozy mysteries, romantic comedies, and historical fiction. I’m also planning a series of romantic suspense next year. It sounds like a crazy combination, but it works for me.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

I started with a historical mystery as I love history and I love a good mystery. But writing a historical mystery is tons of work and can be depressing. I wanted to write something more light-hearted, which is where cozy mysteries came in. I decided to try writing a romance on a lark and ended up having a ball.

How did you break into the field?

I’m not sure if I’ve broken into the field yet. With modern day technology, it’s possible to take control of your own destiny, which I did by becoming an indie writer.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

Some of my novels definitely have a message in them. But the Death in Cupcake series, of which Christmas Cupcakes & A Caper is the fourth novel, is more light-hearted. I’d love if readers chuckled a few times and just generally had a good time while reading.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

I love that stories I make up touch people either by making them laugh or letting them escape from reality for awhile. We all need to escape once in a while.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

It’s a lonely field. You spend most of your time working at a desk by yourself. I miss colleagues and social interaction during the day, which leads me to plan lunches with friends which results in my writing not getting done. It’s a vicious cycle.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Research. Research. Research. There is tons and tons to know when you are an indie writer. There are book covers, formatting, editing, publishing, marketing … the list goes on and on. But there are great resources out there from podcasts to blog posts to books. Start researching right away. Don’t wait until you have ten books out to decide you need to learn how to do all the marketing.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I read pretty much everything from non-fiction historical stuff to genre fiction. I especially love romance and mysteries for taking me away from everyday life which can be stressful and tedious.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

I’ve had a bunch of careers before I started writing full-time. I was in the U.S. Army where I was a military policewoman. I ended up meeting a Dutch man while stationed with NATO. When I finished with the Army, he followed me back to the US where I studied law. I practiced law in the Netherlands for over a decade before giving it up to run a B&B in Germany. Once I realized I’d made a HUGE mistake, I turned back to writing. At first I wrote while the guests were having breakfast and then I moved onto to full-time writing when my husband got a job in Istanbul and we moved there.

I grew up reading everything I could get my grubby hands on, from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew, to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although on the odd occasion I did manage to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic before returning to the law. But practicing law really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out running a B&B wasn’t my thing either. I polished off that manuscript languishing in the attic before following the husband to Istanbul where I decided to give the whole writer-thing a go. But ten years was too many to stay away from my adopted home. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where, in between tennis matches and failing to save the world, I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.
