Apples are at the core of the family business run by Winona Mae Montgomery and her Granny Smythe. But this year’s crop is unseasonably ripe with murder . . .

ONE ROTTEN APPLE

Blossom Valley, West Virginia, is home to Smythe Orchards, Winnie and her Granny’s beloved twenty-five-acre farm and family business. But any way you slice it, it’s struggling. That’s why they’re trying to drum up business with the “First Annual Christmas at the Orchard,” a good old-fashioned holiday festival with enough delicious draw to satisfy apple-picking locals and cider-loving tourists alike—until the whole endeavor takes a sour turn when the body of Nadine Cooper, Granny’s long-time, grudge-holding nemesis, is found lodged in the apple press. Now, with Granny the number one suspect, Winnie is hard-pressed to prove her innocence before the real killer delivers another murder . .

Interview with the Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

I read a series that swept me away from my troubles during a particularly trying time in my life. When the trial passed, I wished I could thank those authors for their stories because they’d given me the reprieve I’d needed. After that, I wanted to do the same thing for someone else.

What genres do you write in?

I write cozy mystery for Kensington, Sourcebooks and Crooked Lane Books. And I write romantic suspense for Harlequin.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

I write to give readers an escape, so I lean toward genres with hope. I think mystery and suspense do that. We get a fun puzzle for our busy minds with both my genres, plus some humor (in a cozy) or romance in a romantic suspense. Either way, my heroines go through serious trials and come out safely in the end. I like everything about all of that!

How did you break into the field?

I’m not sure I have, but I am trying. I write everyday and I’m constantly learning all I can about the industry and my craft. I guess I’ve gotten this far on sheer hardheaded determination.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I write to give readers an escape, so I guess I want them to take away a laugh, a gasp or just some time for themselves. I want to be their break from the demands and chaos.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

I love that my stories can be a buoy to complete strangers.  I wish I could be a motivational speaker or some sort of encouragement on a grand scale, but my severe introversion makes that impossible. So, I think writing is the next best thing.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

For me, in this season of life, finding time to write is the hardest part. I have a home, a husband, kids aged 11, 13 and 16, and all the responsibilities that go with those, from grocery shopping to laundry to the PTA. Sometimes finding a single hour for myself is impossible and I need 6-8 a day.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

If you’re out there thinking you have a story to tell, I’m here to say, Tell it! Write it down. Get someone to give you feedback. Make it better, Polish it and get that baby published. Don’t give up! Only you can tell your story. And as an avid reader, I can say with confidence the world needs more books!

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I read everything, but at the moment, I’m on a read romantic comedy kick and I’ve torn through about twenty books by Susan Mallery this year. Oh! And I will always read anything Janet Evanovich touches.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

Maybe that I’m a grade-A scardey cat? I’m afraid of everything from horses to Oompa Loompas to dentists. It’s probably the reason I write such detailed fear into my heroines. I KNOW what it feels like!!
