There are times when the muse is missing.
There are times when I’m one hundred percent certain the muse has packed her bags and gone to live with someone far more interesting and creative.
When the muse has taken off, leaving me with deadlines and a blank page, I hold tight to the belief I can fix bad writing.
I cannot fix a blank page.
Words, even words I would never, ever, ever claim are better than an empty screen.
So, on those days the muse is off sunning herself, or getting a mani-pedi, or doing whatever it is she does when she leaves me high and dry, I set a timer and give myself thirty minutes to write 500 words.
Then I do it again.
Then I give up. I put on a pair of sneakers and go for a walk in hopes of finding the muse tripped over a crack in the sidewalk (it would serve her right for leaving me).
My route is three miles. Sometimes the muse, will whisper in my ear. I’ve learned the importance of talk to text. She whispers, I repeat what she says into the phone. If I don’t, whatever pearls of inspiration she shared are gone before I get home (some people have minds like steel traps—mine is more like a colander).
I read the notes I’ve texted to myself and write another 500 words.
Then I do it again.
And that is how a book gets written—slogging through 500 words, over and over and over again.
