From acclaimed author Charlie Donlea comes a twisting, impossible-to-put-down novel of suspense in which a filmmaker helps clear a woman convicted of murder—only to find she may be a puppet in a sinister game.
The Girl of Sugar Beach is the most watched documentary in television history—a riveting, true-life mystery that unfolds over twelve weeks and centers on a fascinating question: Did Grace Sebold murder her boyfriend, Julian, while on a Spring Break vacation, or is she a victim of circumstance and poor police work? Grace has spent the last ten years in a St. Lucian prison, and reaches out to filmmaker Sidney Ryan in a last, desperate attempt to prove her innocence.
As Sidney begins researching, she uncovers startling evidence, additional suspects, and timeline issues that were all overlooked during the original investigation. Before the series even finishes filming, public outcry leads officials to reopen the case. But as the show surges towards its final episodes, Sidney receives a letter saying that she got it badly, terribly wrong.
Sidney has just convinced the world that Grace is innocent. Now she wonders if she has helped to free a ruthless killer. Delving into Grace’s past, she peels away layer after layer of deception. But as Sidney edges closer to the real heart of the story, she must decide if finding the truth is worth risking her newfound fame, her career . . . even her life.
Interview with the Author
What initially got you interested in writing?
I read John Grisham’s The Firm in college, fell in love with the suspense, and despite having no creative writing experience I decided someday I’d write a book.
What genres do you write in?
Thriller & Suspense
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
John Grisham, Nelson DeMille and Robert Ludlum. All of these thriller writers gave me my initial desire to create my own stories.
How did you break into the field?
I wrote three full-length manuscripts that were rejected by more than 100 agents and publishers before I wrote Summit Lake, which landed me a publishing deal. Summit Lake went on to become an International Bestseller, and paved the way for my second novel, The Girl Who Was Taken, to land on the USA TODAY bestsellers list. Don’t Believe It is my third novel.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
The feeling of reading one of those books that they didn’t want to put down and couldn’t stop thinking about. Those are the books I love to read, and I do my best to write them as well.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
Meeting the readers. Writing books can feel like being stranded on a deserted island. So when the book finally hits shelves, it’s great to talk to readers about the story.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
The first draft. It’s always the hardest, slowest and most frustrating part of the process. But from there, everything else is so rewarding that it makes it all worth it.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
Don’t listen to the naysayers. Pick out some of the most successful authors you know, study their careers and go for it.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
Mostly thrillers. But I love a quirky Carl Hiaasen book, too.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
Before writing thrillers, I tried my hand at Nicholas Sparks type love stories. It didn’t go well.
What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
Check out my website. It’s just been redesigned, and it’s very interactive. From there, readers can find all my other social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
