To bark or not to bark . . .

Professional pet sitter Daphne Templeton loves the holidays in Sylvan Creek, Pennsylvania. And nothing gets her into the spirit more than the town’s annual Bark the Halls Ball. The whole community will be there to wag their tails, especially this year’s special guest—Celeste “CeeCee” French, founder of a national chain of pet care franchises, who’s returning home to announce plans for a bright new flagship store.

But not everyone’s celebrating CeeCee’s homecoming. Daphne’s friend Moxie Bloom, owner of Spa and Paw, a unique salon for people and their pets, has plenty to growl about. So when CeeCee is found face down under Sylvan Creek’s town Christmas tree, stabbed with a distinctive pair of professional-grade pet shears, suspicion lands squarely on Moxie. Despite Daphne’s promises to Detective Jonathan Black, she quickly reprises her role as amateur sleuth. Ably assisted by her basset hound sidekick, Socrates, she must hurry to prove her friend’s innocence before a killer barks again . . .

Recipe for a Cozy Christmas

The holidays are all about indulging the senses — especially taste. At least, that’s how I feel. Many of my memories center around traditional foods, like my mom’s corn pudding and her stuffing with — brace yourself — scrapple, an Amish-country meat product she substitutes in for sausage.

(I never knew scrapple in stuffing was weird until I was well into adulthood.)

My holiday food traditions grew when I married my husband, whose Polish family celebrates wigilia, a traditional Christmas Eve dinner featuring fish, pierogi and cabbage. A lot of cabbage. Possibly too much cabbage.

Not surprisingly, food plays a big role in my new holiday-themed mystery, A Midwinter’s Tail. The characters are always snacking or enjoying a good peppermint mocha latte. And there are treats for pets, too, and recipes, because everybody deserves a splurge at the holidays.

Do you ever make homemade pet treats? If not, and you have furry family members, you should give it a try!

Here’s a sneak preview of a recipe from A Midwinter’s Tail that your four-legged friend will love. Bone appetit!

Snowdrop’s Favorite Snicker Poodles

  • 3 cups flour best suited to your dog’s diet (Whole wheat, barley, rice, sorghum… whatever works best.)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup water

Preheat your oven to 375˚ and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour(s) and cinnamon. Add the honey, egg, and vanilla extract and stir everything together. Then, using a fork, incorporate scant amounts of water until the ingredients start to come together and form a dough. Gently knead the dough and roll it out onto a floured work surface until it’s about a quarter-inch thick.

This is the fun part. Get your favorite cookie cutters and make shapes, depending upon your mood and the season. (These don’t have to be holiday cookies!)

Bake until golden brown, about 10 to 12 minutes. Keep an eye on them, as they will burn quickly.

Make sure to cool them thoroughly before treating your pup. They will harden as they cool down.
